Optimum Protein Intake - is it nessecary.

I am 42 yr old male, 6'2, well built. I weight 200 pounds.

Healthy overall with few minor health complaints like Chronic Insomnia and frequent constipation. I drink alcohol and smoke regularly.

I used to do sports - my weight then was 175 pounds. Now mostly behind PC, office work, etc.. sedentary life.. I gained about 25 pounds. It shows on my waist and face.

I want to lose the extra pounds (25 in all). Nothing seem to work, as I like to eat 2 large meals a day (again without any exercise, activity).

Last week my brother sent me a box of a supplement called SAMe. he knows I been depressed lately, also with the Alcohol thing, so he thouhgt that this SAMe thing was purpotedly good for liver function, mood enhancer, etc. I started taking it on empty stomach in the morning (I dont eat breakfast, never). From third or fourth day of taking SAMe, I developed better mood, more calm, relaxed. I even started going to the Gym!! I just felt good overall.

Now the interesting part: though I dont eat breakfast, come lunch, come dinner...I dont feel hungry. Honestly I could stay all day, even next day without food. Just aint hungry. I instantly started to lose weight - down 5 pounds in 3 days. Even after I get back from the Gym, aint hungry at all - but FULL of energy. Man this feels great. Could lose all the extra pounds in - may be - 2 weeks!!

Told my brother about the effect...he was pleased that he helped me out of my depression, and inot a better spirit. yet he cautioned me about NOT eating Protein, or enough Protein - as this will lead not only lead to loss of few extra pounds, but also of muscles all over the body!! I said: when I reduce my food intake, or even if I go on a fast from all Protein like meats, fish, poultry - the body will start to lose the FAT belt first, then and only then will the body start to go after the muscles for energy, etc.

His response was: he heard that actually the first to go wasnt fat but the precious well developed muscle. Adding, that if I continue 'not eating Protein'...say for sake of body system colon cleansing, I will lose my overall body muscles - that give it the good athletic shape/look!

I am really confused about this Protein thing in a diet. If someone is experiencing the miracle of losing pounds the fast and easy way - should they be concenred about lack or absence of protein in their system. If I lose the full extra 25 pounds, I will go back to eating a well portioned Protein...but dont want to do so now.

PLEASE HELP resolving this seemingly simple Q: if you dont have your usual appetite for eating, and you are losing wieght without suffering hunger, should you be concerned about lack of protein in your diet. Even if it were for say a month, till you lose those Extra 25 lb.

Thanks for any helpfull feed back.
