What do you do when diet and exercise doesnt work?
For over a year now I have been counting all my calories and exercising 6 days a week. I walk, play tennis, even use the gym from time to time, etc. Still, I have lost at maxium 12 lbs and Im stuck. I cant go any further and I have 100 more lbs to lose.
Whats worse is that I jump up as much as 7 to 8 lbs on the scale because of water weight. So one day Ill weigh 289 and the next day Ill be 297.
Is this normal? Why cant I lose weight steadily?

It can be a combination of many things..one might be that youve platoed..meaning your body has gotten used to the same workout day in and day out..and just stops burning fat and calories i know its happened to me a times so i rearrange my workout and change some things. Its like your fooling your body into getting used to another workout. As for the weight water has been known to work when you feel bloated..drink more it will flush you out...and help ease that extra weight. Sometimes working out more is just that more..not better..from the last 80 pounds ive lost ive educated myself in things to do and not all of us are the same. I workout four to five times a week but vary my workouts from mornings to evenings. I think you might want to vary your workouts and not try as hard...even the calories thing i eat six small meals a day..portion control but also vary the things i eat ...try some of those ideas and see if it makes a diff. good luck..

I thought people plateaued usually when they lost at least half of their weight. I didnt realize you can be 100 lbs overweight and platuea right from the start. I dont know what else to do for exercise. I thought if I walked everday at least 2 miles and played tennis then the weight should come off naturallly. I am eating under 2,000 cal. and I been to the nutrionist and said thats where I should be. When I eat less than that she said my metabolism will shut down. And if I eat more of course I will gain.
But the fact is, Im not losing any. Im not even down 10% weight loss.
This isnt just 20 or 30 lbs. I am at my highest weight ever, and I cant lose any.

if it continues to be a problem maybe you need to seek out the advice with a doctor...it appears that it might be something other than what your doing which seems to not be working..it might be something going on within your own body that isnt allowing it to lose more..ask a doctor tell them the issues your having..since youve exhausted everything eles.

You may have plateuaed even with only 10 pounds of loss. Research has shown that it can happen with only 10 pounds loss and is very discouraging. I just was a site that advised keeping a diet journal to make sure that you only get maitence dcalories and then working out for 2 weeks intensily enough to sweat. Then start dieting again. This will reset your metabolism. You have to keep exact records of your calories when you do the breaker and then start again.

You are right Vasinger. You shouldnt hit a weight loss plateau after losing 12 lbs.
I have lost 60lbs in two years and have maintained in successfully. During my journey, I started a weight loss blog for healthy dieting and fitness regimens. So, I research my information thoroughly to see if it is right for me.
My advise to you. Is that you are not on the right program. Your program is: Counting Calories and Heavy Cardio.
Counting calories and sticking to it (that's quite marvelous, by the way) is not going to guarantee you your weight loss goals. With your fitness regimen of exercising 6 days a week, you will tend to develop muscle mass which is probably responsible for your up-and-down-on-the-scale problem. Remember, muscle develops under fat.
I hit a weight loss plateau after losing 25 lbs. One day my sister had to go on a business trip and I house sat for her. I found a book called the GI diet at her house. After reading it an implementing some tips to my existing diet, I managed to lose another 15lbs. And you know what I added to my program? No milk with my coffee, diet sugar and no eggs. Eggs was a main staple to my original diet, that I found out that it was not a green light food item for me.
When I hit another weight loss plateau, I changed my program with some easy goals such as no food after 7:00PM, no alcohol, make sure to eat a healthy breakfast, and a Slim Quick supplement.
Of course maintaining your weight loss changes your program again.
Good luck!
