Big Me

*takes a deep breath* OK. Here goes nothing

I've been fat my whole life and it sucks. I've been vegetarian for almost 8 years but I've learned to work around it and I'm still FAT and it sucks. What sure as @#*@ sucks most is that I live in an Asian country where practically everyone is rail-thin and I'm the only one who's FAT. I'm so sick of it. Graaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL

I've tried all kinds of diets and in the past I always succeeded. In a sense. At one point I lost around 80 lbs., & went from 230 (my heaviest) to 150 (I'm around 5'6" tall). HOWEVER, my tendency to regain most of the weight is 100%. I just can't help it. I'm back at around 190 lbs. I think. I can't really get around to weighing myself or looking at myself in the mirror cos I get annoyed at how fat I am. LOL.

At this point I'm just tired of losing weight only to regain most of it back. The last time that I lost weight, I was exercising for 6 hours a day (sometimes more) & for every meal I'd only have like 2 bites. That @#!*$1n6! sucked too. LOL.

I feel that my weight problem is a genetic/habit/lifestyle/psychological thing (wow, that's a lot, lol). Both my parents are overweight. A lot of my mom's siblings are overweight. My paternal grandparents were overweight. My siblings & I are overweight.

My family LOVES to eat. It's kind of like a bonding thing for us too. I mean, eating together as a family at the dinner table is a big thing for us cos it's 1 of those few times that we're actually together. We don't really have a lot of activities that we do together. We always have snacks lying around. We hate the taste of diet food. I've grown accustomed to using Splenda instead of sugar & we use No-Cholesterol cooking oil but our food is STILL. ALWAYS. FRIED. LOL.

Our daily activities don't exactly involve physical work...because we have people to do that for us.

Also, where we live rice is a staple. It's so hard to eat a regular meal without having to eat RICE, which has been found to be the lord of the most evil carbs. Also, this is gonna sound really weird/funny but I feel that my layers of fat protect me. In more senses than one.

I've considered liposuction but seriously it disgusts me & kind of scares me.

It sucks. It's kinda like my smoking. I can't find reasons to NOT smoke and smoking always comforts me. Like food. And it's like everything makes me hungry. If I see a template that's peach in color it immediately makes me want food. Hell it could just as well (that rhymed) have been sh** brown & it still would've made me think of chocolates. LOL

Either those or I'm blaming everything/everyone else but myself again. So anyway I haven't really killed myself yet which means that I haven't lost all hope. I'm trying some diet pills soon & I'm gonna try to--as much as I HATE IT, exercise again. I looked up Diet Forums using Google & found this place & I hope I can get support from this community.

I hope anyone who's trying to diet can get support from this community.

Wow! What a lot of reasons you gave why you don't succeed at keeping the weight off - and it's great that you recognise they are all about your lifestyle because that's what has to change to make any weight loss permanent.

The problem with diets (for everyone) is that you make drastic changes "just until I lose weight" and then go right back to the habits that made you overweight in the first place.

I think you know that just doesn't add up.

Instead of dieting this time, how about tackling one of those lifestyle issues at a time and making a new habit? Once you put that in place and it feels natural and easy, go on to tackle something else.

How much control do you have over cooking by the way? This seems to be a big problem. I don't believe in "diet food" only in cooking delicious recipes in a healthy way. But Rice is just not an issue. Also Frying is not an issue if you cook in tiny quantities of oil (like a couple of squirts of oilve oil spray and not a deep fat fryer).

But not moving much as you go about your day IS a problem - there are studies that show slim people use up 350 calories a day more just in everyday activities - without working out or anything. They just get up and down more, fidget more etc.

Hope you get the support you are looking for on the forum

all the best for your weight loss success

Thank you Miss Elizabeth =)

I do not have much control over cooking, as someone cooks for us.. Not that I can't tell the cook how to prepare the meal though, right? If there's a will, there's a way. Food doesn't always have to be fried. Or it doesn't always have to be fried with so much oil, at least.

Also, thanks so much for establishing the fact that I DO need to get up off my * & get some exercise to lose weight. Sometimes I don't really believe something until I hear it from someone else..

Will do. Thank you.

I tested the diet by going off of it for a week (before I lost a lot of weight). I continuted to lose weight. I got it from www.mystorycouldbeyours.com?refid=diet. May be worth a try!

Wink Exercises

By the way Miss Elizabeth I was wondering if you could recommend exercises for someone at my weight (190 lbs.). Would you recommend Pilates? And how many hours a day? I'd like to lose 15 lbs. in a month. Is that safe/healthy?

Hi Unsvelte

(By the way your forum name is very distinctive - but it is not a good label to have if you want to lose weight - how about Getting Svelte? )

How fantastic to have a cook. Not sure how much you can tell him or her what to cook but if you can ask your cook to prepare whatever recipe you want you have got it made!

I have tried Pilates - it's good exercise for toning up but it's hard to get the form right without a class so I'd only do it if I was getting taught the movements professionally. Not sure there's enough movement in it for weight-loss but it's important to build up the strength in your muscles anyway.

The exercises which are good at any size are walking and swimming. Swimming is great because it does not stress your joints - but it's not great if you don't like it or there's not a pool nearby or you hate to go out in public in your bathing costume.

So I swear by walking - you can start with as little as you like and build up. Even better get a pedometer and do as many steps as you can each day working up little by little to 10,000 (which doesn't take as long as you think)! You will never look back.

Remember and check with your doctor if there's any doubt about your health before you begin a new exercise programme.

By the way, I forgot to say that losing 15lbs a month is too much as you can only lose 1 - 2 lbs of fat a week and that's the only stuff you want rid of.

Although you might lose a little more as you shed excess water at the beginning of a weight loss program you can't healthily sustain a greater level for the long term.

The stuff you don't want to lose is muscle - and a rapid weight loss can mean you are shedding this. Every pound of muscle burns 50 calories a day even when you are at rest. So the more muscle tissue you have the better.

If you keep losing weight rapidly over and over again you just keep losing more of that precious muscle and replacing it with fat as you regain the weight.
