Emotional eater....diets aren't working!!!

Hi I am new to this forum, but not to dieting! I have been successful on several diets - especially low carb, but the problem is that my eating is completely dependent on my mood and the stress in my life!!! I lost and gained 25 pounds lo carbing last year, and am just too disgusted to get started again! I am a part time working mom, and yes, I do swing from bored to overly stressed almost every day! I've read books on how to cope with this "addiction" and they work for a while, but I was hoping that someone here could relate and maybe give me some practical tips on what really works for lifetime maintenance!

I felt exactly the same way. I never did the lo carbing diets though...just the counting calories and everytime me and my fiance had an argument or I was bored or frustrated...I would immediately stop dieting. So far this time so good, but it's only been two weeks ....I think seeing the results has helped me but I also decided to do something new....get support emotionally! I have this online buddy that is also dieting so when one or the other of us are stuck in a rut we call on each other...it seems to get me back on track and give me a renewed sense of self confidence! That's what has helped me so far...good luck to you!

FAD diets will do nothing but lead to weight gain. If you are emotionally tied to food, you may need to seek professional help to rid yourself of the emotional attatchment. Then work with a doctor that will monitor your health and get you a lifestyle that you can live with...........that's when the weight will come off and stay off!!

It's a habit thing

Emotional eating is just like any addictive pattern of behaviour - you've got into bad habits that's all.

The only way to break bad habits is to

a) be aware of them in the moment they occur and realise you're following a bad pattern
b) break the pattern by doing something different
c) continually do something different until the new habit/pattern sticks

No one pretends this is easy, but as long as you say that you can't do something for whatever reason, the less likely you are to be able to do it. The emotions don't make you eat. You are the only one who puts food into your mouth and you are the only one who can stop. But you CAN stop by taking control of this.

hi megan, when i read your email i thought i was reading something that i've written! i'm a full-time working mother who lost nearly 30 lbs this year. the good news is that i've only gained back 20 lbs, so i guess i'm ahead. fortunately i have joined a fitness center and have made exercise a part of my life--exercising 4-5 days a week for at least an hour. but i am eating too much too often and loading up on breads and sugars and red wine. i agree with janice elizabeth that this is a bad bad habit that i got out of for about six months, but slipped back into.

i am thinking about ways to break the pattern... someone i know who lost weight recently said that she would visualize the scale in her head and watch the number drop on the scale. that was enough for her to break the patterns. she also said that she set 5 lb. goals -- which made things more achievable for her. i know another person who says that she "talks to herself" in her head. she says that she stops and asks herself "do you really want that?" and then counts to twenty.

me, i'm feeling undisciplined. i've been thinking about going to a hypnotist to get my mind in alignment, but i really don't know that it would work, and i wonder if it would be worth the investment. maybe psychologically it would help me make the leap to the necessary discipline to make it work. i'm just so tired of yo yo-ing.

success to you!

I tend to agree what has been written here, with the exception of a little red wine. There are many benefits of having a glass or two a day. I try counting. We all do that with our kids to keep from exploding on them, try counting very slowly to ease the stress. As far as bordom, always have something that interests you with you. I bring the sudoku puzzle with me when I take my daughter to gymnastics. Otherwise, I would fall asleep.

I also feel like I could have written your post. I have been an emotional dieter ever since staying at ome with my first child, over six years ago. It is truly like and addition and it has been so hard for me to stop. Evetually I stopped trying to diet because I knew that would not work. I recently began deiting again, but know that I need emotional support if I am to succeed at losing weight. Emotional eating is a vicious cycle that has been very hard for me to break.
