Thumbs down

Hello All-

Well I'm on here for many of the same reasons everyone else is...I'm over weight and I need advise. I'm 25 years old, 5'11 and weight about 190 pounds. It may not sound like much for my height but when I look in the mirror I'm unsatisfied and I know my husband is too. Over the last 7 years I've gained almost 60 lbs. I exercise regularly and eat fairly well but I seem to binge eat. I'll be good for like 5 days eating around 1200 calories (sometimes less which I dont think is that good) but then (like tonight) I totally porked out on 2 big bowls of cereal with whole milk, a bag of potato chips, and a lot of tortilla chips and guacamole. I think it's just the fact that I like eating, and don't eat when I'm hungry, just when I'm bored. Please someone, I need advise...I really want to fit into a bikini again for spring break. Help!

-Seriously Desperate

Hello sunandsmiles!

I take it from reading between the lines that your problem is binging at night?

Think About All Of The Steps Involved:

1. The thought enters your mind that you want to cheat.

2. You decide to take action on the thought.

3. You stand up.

4. You walk over to the fridge, door (to go to the store), or phone (to order food).

5. You open the fridge door, grab your keys and unlock the door, or dial the phone (after looking through your pile of menus and picking one out).

6. You reach into the fridge and start searching around, walk out your door to the store or sit and wait the fast food delivery man.

7. Etc...

These are definitely a lot of steps! And there are many in between I have probably missed as well. So as we see here, there are 7 opportunities to reason with your own mind, and think "ok, do I really want to kill all my hard work in the gym by eating something that will only award me temporary satisfaction, and make me look/feel worse?"

You can read the entire article at: Late Night Binge Eating. It is really a good read and I believe addresses some of your question. Check it out and see if it helps!

SunandSmiles,
Hi I understand what it's like to feel as if you are on a run away train and watch the weight go up and up and up.
However there is a way to end all that insanity.

Stay away from fad diets
You are on the right track counting calories but 1200 is really low.
I have a site where I explain more Gentle Reduction

I totally agree with Celticcr; one must stay away from fad diets. I've been struggling with my weight since I can remember, and it’s hard, specially when others around you eat whatever they want and you feel like you are "not normal".

I think that we should get our minds in "changing our eating habits" and not dieting. The main thing though, is to really know ourselves and realize that we can not eat whatever we want to eat because our systems our not the same as others. It took time for me to realize that I should do something about my weight. But what really helped me (and I'm hoping this could help some of you too), is to set small goals, and look forward on a reward, for example, a new dress, new pair of jeans, maybe a nice weekend with you're husband in a resort, the point is to keep focused and motivated. And motivation is the key. I would suggest to get some support too. The forums like his one are very very helpful, because you can openly talk about you’re feelings, and sometimes we tend to hide our feelings to others so we don’t have to face the fact that we have a problem with loosing weight.

So to make this short, I would like to share my advices:
1.- Face the fact that you are going to do something to change you’re eating habits.
2.- Keep small goals in mind and reward yourself when you get to you’re goal.
3.- Involve someone else on you’re journey, (you’re husband, friend, forum buddies) to keep motivated.
4.- Don’t despair, we all know It’s hard, we all have been there and done bad things. Take one day at a time. And picture yourself as the person who is changing and how successful you are, because now you just made the first and most important thing: You decided to do something about it.

Goog luck!
