Hello Everyone.
I just found this forum and am hoping I can find some help/motivation/support here. First, let me tell you a few things about myself.
I am a 50 y/o male that is in need of a supply of will power. I am INCREDIBLY weak in this regard. I am hopelessly addicted to sugar and carbs.
What the heck can one do to overcome this addiction. At this point in my life, I'm "only" 20-25lbs. overweight. I've got to do something to end this madness.
I should probably end this post for now until I get a greeting or two. Then I'll tell everyone more about myself. Jim

Hi Jim,

It's nice to meet you . I know what you mean about being incredibly weak when it comes to sweets. I love my sweets and carbs (of course, I love fatty, salty foods, too!). The worst, and of course the ones I crave most, are the foods that are high in both sugar and fat (e.g., cheesecake).

What kind of program are you on? Are you doing an Atkins plan?

I look forward to chatting with you more

Jana

Hi Jana and PUTZ. It's great to get a reply from you two.
Jana, I'm not on any particular program right now, other than consuming all the carbs and calories I can at a time.
A couple of years ago I bought some books on the Atkins plan. Dr. Atkins makes a lot of sense in what he writes, but being married to a woman (along with two girls) than can eat anything anytime w/o fear of gaining weight is pretty much hopeless.
I'm in retail, and finding time to eat anything can be a challenge, let alone eating right. It's always some form of fast food, whether it be for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I gotta tell you, I find myself looking forward to getting the early shift because that means I get to have my sausage & egg McMuffin and cinnamon roll. I am ADDICTED to those cinnamon rolls. I even lick the sugar off the paper they come in. This just bites! I hate myself for doing it, but I can never seem to find the willpower to quit. I guess we are all in the same boat, or else we wouldn't belong to this forum, huh?
Getting back to the Atkins plan, it seemed that when I wasn't at work, I spent most of my time preparing what I was going to eat when I was at work. There is definately something missing in this approach; just got to figure out how to do it.
WHEW! I've been rambling for a while now. I guess I should shut up!!!!
Jana and PUTZ, what part of the world to each of you reside in? I'm a transplanted Texan that has been living in the Memphis area for ten (looonnnnnggg) years now.
I look forward to chatting with both of you soon. Take care. Jim

Don't get me wrong--I'm not doing the Atkins plan, either, and I'm not a huge fan of it, although I think any weight loss plan has to include controlling carb intake. But, I'll save that rant for later I just thought you might be since you were talking about your weakness for carbs.

Hey Jim,

Transplanted Texan huh? My parents live in Cleburne TX so I spend my time between Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and Cleburne. Anyway I was in the sme boat as you around a year ago. I was a huge fan of the sausge mcMuffin (made sure it was supersized so i got that extra hasbrown as well). For me that was the hard part giving up my breakfast food. What I did is I removed myself from fast food and changed over to things like fruits, yogurt /w granola, or cereal. I know its hard to do things like like this when living with people that can eat anything. My ex girlfriend could eat anything she wanted and always stay at 115lbs. (It has been proven that people that can eat anything they want and not gain can be a couple of things 1. Rapid metabolism 2. They eat unhealthy than make up by under eating the rest of the day/week). Try to cut out the early morning fast food if you can't do do it completly then gentley ease it out . Cut back to 3 times a week then twice then once. I find don't cut it out completely every week as that could lead to bad cravings and then overeating. For example on Friday I eat whatever I want. ( I have gone from 250+lbs to 159lbs.).

Also do some light exercise go for walks during your breaks or lunch or go for a light run/bike/walk at the end of the day or the start of every day. I went from e|being a complete couch potatoe to a 5 days a week twice a day distance runner and weight lifter. Mind you you don't have to do anything that extreme but I think I'm getting my point across. Anyway I'M really starting to ramble now and I hope this points you in the right direction. Remember IF THE MIND IS WILLING THE BODY WILL CONFORM!

Jim...If you really want to give up sugar & un-healthy carbs, try searching on the net for info on the health problems that you may end up with if you continue to eat the way you have been. Doing that & getting a book or two from the library can be a real eye-opener!

I am also in retail, but take my lunch & snacks to work with me, as we have a small fridge & microwave in the break room. You may want to try my diet. This is basically a low glycemic diet...a modified version of the cabbage soup diet (it is a chicken broth or tomato based veg soup. I have lost 8 lbs. in 4 wks...not a lot, but I am almost never very hungry & feel great! The best part about this diet is that you can eat all the time, which is recommended to keep the metabolism going. You may be able to increase the quantities, since you are male & will need more calories. The main thing is that there is no added sugar or white flour products on this diet, except for the first week, I made an egg & muffin sandwich( you could have a whole wheat muffin) for breakfast. The amazing thing is that I no longer want to eat things with sugar or bread (loved that home-made bread)...have lost the cravings for it.

Breakfast: coffee (mine's 1/2 decaf & flavored) with 1 tsp. creamer & sweetener(no-cal),& 1 egg omelet w. veg. filling, topped with salsa or 3/4 c. cereal(I prefer flax instead of bran) with 1/2 c. skim milk.

Snack: coffee again(yes, I have to have it) & Veggie Soup with meat & brown rice(either chicken or turkey Italian Sausage-my favorite) & thawed frozen fruit with 1/4 c. non-sugar sweetened lo-fat yogurt. Apples, chopped, with cinnamon & a sm. amt of OJ & sweetener warmed in the microwave is good, too.

Lunch: same as above, but may also have some veg. marinated in diet dressing...or seasoned vingegar & virgin olive oil.

Snack:usually just the fruit & yogurt or maybe plain fruit & soup if I am very hungry & the coffee, ofcourse!

Dinner: usually the soup, but may also have a salad or stir-fry some veggies with chicken. Or you could broil or bake some fish with a salad & brown rice or the soup on the side.

Snacks:I drink diluted juice (mix mine with no-cal drink mix), tea & water all day.I also keep some dried fruit-either apricots or cranberries or cherries with me, to satify any sweet cravings...do try not to eat too much at once ...just about the recommended serving size on the package, tho. Fresh fruit is good, too. I may also have some water based tuna mixed with plain lo-fat yogurt dressing ( I make mine with ranch dressing mix) & snack on that with celery sticks. Sometime, I have a small amt. of cereal with milk.

I also write down what I eat, that way you can look back & see where you may need to adjust what you are eating. Such as I found that drinking the diluted juice in the morning...sipping it constantly...not all at once...was necessary to keep my energy levels up. You could subst. Veg Juice if you prefer. This is an easy diet to stay on, as you are eating all the time. As time goes on, & you reach your weight loss goal, you could start adding additional food. The main thing is to change your eating habits permanently. I assume that you are basically healthy, but you may want to check with your Dr. & see if he approves of this diet.

Do you know your B/P or cholestral readings? This diet should improve those, too.

Good luck & Happy Eating...Pat

Thanks for your tips, Pat. I'm like you with the coffee. GOTTA HAVE IT!
The yogurt with fruit and/or granola sounds like a better breakfast than the McMuffin and cinnamon roll. I have no idea what my cholesterol readings are; it would probably scare the heck out of me! Maybe that's just what I need.
I've never had a problem with blood pressure, though.
Again, many thanks for your reply. Jim

Hey Jim...I think that you are 1/2 the way there or you wouldn't be here!
Do find out what those cholestrol readings are...that might be just the motivation that you need. How do you feel otherwise...are you easily tired, on edge, un-able to concentrate before meals and sluggish or sleepy after?
