With turkey day upon us, I wonder how, or if, my diet is going to survive. I know from years past that all those luscious homemade goodies on the tables will call my name, and I haven't stopped until I have gorged myself. How can this year be different? Will I have the resolve to eat moderately? Can I really limit myself to one piece of pumpkin pie? And if one meal weren't bad enough, what about the days that follow? Leftovers are as much a tradition as the meal itself. Does anybody have any advice for sticking to my diet (or fairly close) during the holidays? I'd like to hear from you.

Jana

Hi Jana...guess we all have the same thoughts about all the temptations waiting for us I have lost 11 lbs. so far & don't want to undo all the work I have done to get it off either.
I am going over to my daughters for dinner, so atleast I won't be tempted by all the left-overs. I am on a veggie soup diet, so I plan to bring home some turkey bones to make some more soup :P I am taking over some fruit salad (which I can eat), shrimp & macaroni salad (shrimp cocktail for me) & homemade bread (which I won't eat, and no longer crave). I have decided that just for today, I will have a very small portion of everything else that I want...after all it is Thanksgiving! I will try to savor every bite & eat slowly.
We have lots to be thankful for in this country...too bad that we can't send all the extra food that we should not be eating to those who go to bed hungry every night because they simply don't have enough money or food.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving..Pat

Hi Pat,

How on earth do you manage to stick to your soup diet? It is obviously working for you , I just wish I had that kind of will power. I am writting from England where Turkey day is not celebrated - but I am dreading Christmas and the rest of the holiday period. Short of moving somewhere in the world that does not celebrate the festive season, I don't know what I am going to do!
I have tried all sorts of diets and at the moment I am trying Atkins. So far I have lost 4lbs - easily put back on on Christmas day I am sure .
I start with lots of determination but then fall off very easily.

Any motivational tips you could share with me?

Happy Holidays xx

Hi England...check out post#5 in the fruit & cabbage soup post. There I have given my "diet plan". As you can see, I am eating almost every couple of hours...this seems to keep the metabolism going, plus I am almost never very hungry...the soup is very filling & the fruits satisfy my sweet tooth. I, also happen to like everything that I am eating. I do try to vary the flavors & ingrediants of the soups to keep it interesting and treating myself to lots of different fruits ...and do have an occasional meal without soup consisting of veggies & fish or chicken. I don't like to count calories or measure my food, so this works for me. I really don't miss the sugar, flour or fat anymore & love that my clothes are fitting so much looser! I also would like for my blood pressure to come down for health reasons, so that is an additional motivation.
How long have you been on the Atkins diet? Guess you are still craving sweets? I lost my sugar cravings very fast following this diet, and find that I can satisfy those urges for sweets very easily with the fruit....much better for you, too.

Hi Pat,

Thanks for your reply, some how it just seems to help talking to someone who understands. I've not even been doing Atkins for a month and already I'm sick of it and like you said I am dying for anything that contains sugar! (Not to mention the smelly breath and need for green tea to help keep me regular!)

It's great that your clothes are feeling good and you have certainly motivated me to look at other diets - keep up the good work!
I have had a read through the soup and fruit diet and everyone I have "spoken" to says that it works, so I am very tempted to give it a go. Although I just can't imagine eating that much soup!

I have lots of parties to go to over the holidays and I already know how depressed I am going to get when most of my friends and work colleagues all turn up in their tiny little dresses looking fabulous Oh well, I do try to accept that I will never be skinny LOL, but for health reasons and for my own happiness I need to find a diet that works for me.

I will start the soup diet after Christmas I think - new years resolution and all! In the mean time wish me luck trying to avoid carbs :P

England x

I know what you mean about accepting that I will never be skinny. I have wasted too much time wondering how skinny people "do it." Faster metabolism, less appetite, better self-control? When in reality, it doesn't matter what other people do, it just matters what I do. I don't think you were trying to, but I think you were dead on when you gave 2 reasons to diet: health reasons and your own happiness. I think those are the ONLY 2 reasons a person should diet. Good luck on the soup and fruit diet. Hope it works for ya
