Today I went to see the dietician. She weighed me and it came to be 193 pounds. About 4 weeks ago I weighed 194 pounds. Needless to say I'm very dissapointed only losing a pound. I told her what my diet is. I eat about 2 protein shakes a day. I eat only one real meal a day consisting of a hamburger no bun with rice or noodles. I eat later in the evening a few pieces of cheese and perhaps a bowl of cereal. So my calorie consumption is way down there. She commented that I might not be taking in enough calories. I remember about a year ago when I initially started trying to lose weight I ate just salads. A few people then told me that that won't work because you are feeding your body so few calories that your body basically thinks it's starving and your metabolism slows down and your body burns very few calories in an effort to retain your current weight. My dietician said I could consume 1200 calories a day and still lose weight. Do you think that maybe that is the problem? I've been swimming 4 nights a week for the last 3 weeks so I must be burning some calories. Please advise.

Just a shot in dark here but those protein shakes are probably loaded with carbohydrates and I understand that most protein shakes are for people that are trying to gain mass (i.e. body builders)

Here's my take on it as someone that is active and also "diets". I don't think you are eating enough for your activity level. Protein shakes are fine, I wouldn't knock them..however, they are usually NOT meal replacement shakes (which give you the total package as a meal replacement). What brand do you drink?

I would suggest having a breakfast, protein shake, a real lunch if possible, another protein shake, and then a real dinner. You need to be careful about eating the hamburger..how much fat is in it? Lean meat? Is it sirloin? Do you drain the fat when you cook it? The rice and noodles are good carb choices. Another question, do you eat after 8 pm? If so, that may be your problem. How large a portion of those carbs do you eat?

Are you drinking a ton of water? If not, you NEED to.

It comes down to this, the activity you engage in requires energy to do. Energy comes from the food you eat..food you eat constantly. To start losing weight you need to be consisten on when you eat, what you eat, and how hard you exercise. It is a combination of these elements which will allow you to succeed.

You are burning calories, but your body is unsure when to expend energy from the food, when to use the metabolism and when to store fat. Consistency is the key.

I think 1200 calories is a very reasonable number for the calories you should intake per day. In fact, I have read where people have recommended 1400 and 1600 calories per day diets for weight loss for very active people, like you. You can definitely eat too little. Besides sending your body into starvation mode, which is counterproductive, starving yourself is not a sustainable, positive, healthy, happy way to live your life. And you're dieting to feel better about yourself, right? I wish you the best.

Actually I never drink just water. I don't like it. I drink Crystal Light, or apple juice, or orange juice. Something like that. I could try drinking water but I doubt if I could drink 8 glasses of the stuff. And I do eat after 8 pm. Later into the evening sometime I get a little hungry and I will have a bowl of cereal, or an apple, or a protein shake.

I eat dinner at work at about 7:30 pm. I swim at 9:00 pm. But I get hungry late at night so I gotta eat something. And I tend to go to bed late.

I have read that eating 6 small meals a day speads up your metabolism and helps you burn more calories, so eating 1200-1600 calories would be metabolized by your body very easily.

If you eat after 8 pm it just sits there and turns to fat? That's one of those myths similar to the one about not going swimming after eating. Your body doesn't process calories differently after dark. However, the foods that people tend to go for when they are sitting in front of the TV after dinner--chips, ice cream, chocolate treats, and the like--are usually high in fat and calories. The kinds of foods you're eating are the concern, not the clock.

An interesting article appeared in a recent issue of Woman's World (12/21//04) on this subject. A recent discovery made at Wayne Staye University in Detroit shows you can lose weight by - get this! - eating an ordinary bowl of cereal before bed. A group of overweight volunteers lost up to 9 pounds in four weeks by simply eating a bowl of Rice Krispies or Corn Flakes before bed. Why does it work?

First, the cereal trick is so effective because it satisfies the urge to snack but keeps the calories low. Having a healthy snack planned prevents mindless munching on junk food.

Secondly, studies have shown that high-carb snacks like cereal aid in the production of serotonin, a soothing neurotransmitter. When serotonin is working its magic, you're much less likely to crave confort foods.

Remember, too, 357 mag, that apple juice, orange juice have a fair number of calories. Crystal Light is low in calories. But it is sweetened with aspartame. There's a lot of information out there about the harm this product can cause. Check out: http://www.HolisticMed.com/aspartame/ for a list of aspartame toxicity side effects. True, a little probably won't kill you, but it's good to know what you're eating.

You also mention you drink little water and don't like the stuff. If you did a little research on the health benefits associated with drinking water, you might be more inclined to up your intake. This post is getting a little lengthy, but I'll give you just one reason to get you thinking about this.

The average person's colon is a toxic waste dump. They're carrying around between 15 and 25 pounds of waste material in there at any given time. If you're overweight or highly alergic, you might be carrying around a lot more.

Our high fat, low fiber diets of hard to digest foods are clogging the very canal that was designed to eliminate them. The longer this waste stays in the body the more toxic and encrusted the colon becomes. Our bodies are being poisoned because the moisture that is absorbed from the colon has to pass through this toxic waste that has attached itself to the lining of the colon. This toxified moisture is then distributed throughout the body poisoning our vital organs and deteriorating the body's own immune system.

A high fiber diet and plenty of water will help keep the large intestine in good working order and associated improvements in one's sense of well being will be the result.
