Emotional Troubles?
I implemented this forum so that we can have a place to discuss the darker side of dieting..something that affect millions of people every day.
Personally I know of several people who have become quite depressed through their weightloss efforts and have become emotionally withdrawn from life. It's tough to get them back on track because their weight issues and lack of results from dieting cause them to be constantly depressed.
I also have one other friend that I've known for a long time who has gone "extreme" in her dieting. She has been hospitalized in the past for binge eating/purging. And the funny thing is, she's not heavy at all..she just has a poor image of herself when it comes to her weight (she is 5'2, 120lbs).
Do you guys know anyone like this, or are you yourself dealing with these issues?

I know I have had a lot of desperate people posting to my blog who spent a lot of money on so called miracle products and are quite upset that they are not getting results. There are so many people looking for the answer out there it's no wonder that people get into problems with this. Society doesn't make it easy to be overweight - we are bombarded by messages telling us how we should look and if we don't look like the (airbrushed, made-up, perfect) stars we feel we are inadequate.

I totally agree with the moderator that often people who imagine themselves to being overweight because of a poor self-image resort to extremes. There has to exist a balance of the right amount and combination of a daily diet, exercise, conviction, and realistic goals for a day, week, and month; keeping goals will help to motivate to make you want to stick to your overall weight loss plan. One must build the inner confidence to lose weight--if you are truly overweight--not to please others, but to feel good about oneself.
My view.

Depressed Already!
It's interesting that many people, as you have described them, become depressed or suffer from some form of discouragement as their diet fails. I really think that most overweight people already suffer from some form of emotional turmoil, like most of us, but use food to deal with their emotional discomfort. I know this is controversial, but if you've ever studied any mood disorder you'll have a better understanding of how this is possible.
I think that many overweight people are insecure, depressed and holding on to memories of the past that they can't let go of. When these memories are triggered they eat. However, at moments in their lives they reach out for hope, and this is where you have the real underlying problem. The diet industry gives them a solution, but it isn't a true solution that deals with the individual emotional problems. Rather it's some new way of eating, or some new way of using 'control' to adhere to a rigid framework that will not work.
So, I don't think that people are failing on these diets...I think the diets are failing these people. Society as a whole, especially the weight loss industry, is doing a huge diservice to these people. It gives them hope, and then when their diets fail, it causes the people on them to react with greater emotional disturbance. It's truly a shame.

I was all of the above (depressed, poor self image, discouraged, etc). I could not get my weight to change. I had grown to 260 pounds, my husband wasn't looking at me the way he used to. Everything was out of control. So I know what you guys are talking about.
I also tried just about everything, but it wasn't until I started working with Dr Dean, through his web site (www.triforlife.net), that I was actually shown and taught how to take care of myself. He helped get me through all the emotional 'stuff' that I had going on.
Anyway....I went from 260 to 137 in 1.5 years. The weight has been off for over a year now. I have some more to go....and I will get there. Nothing is perfect, but with their help, support, education and accountability I know that I am half the women I used to be!
Good Luck
Sara

Thanks...I am pretty proud of it!! I do have pics, but I don't like to post them on public forums. I know that I couldn't have done it without help.

Don't let your weight depress you, or the weight wins!
Being overweight can be depressing, but you can't let your weight depress you or the weight will win! I have four beautiful girls, with my first daughter I gained 70 lbs. As if that wasn't shocking enough, I gained 20 pounds with each of my 3 girls after that. In high school, I was 5'9" and 125 lbs... Cheerleader, softball player, so this was pretty depressing to me. I tried several lose weight programs, products, nothing worked.
I finally had a break through with Herbalife. Herbalife, gives your body the metabolism that you need to lose weight and most importantly INCHES! I have lost 25 lbs and 9 inches. After the first week, I did not have any weight loss, but I was losing inches left and right. Everyone wants to lose weight... but what you really want is to lose the INCHES. Herbalife products work to deplete the fat in your body.
If you are interested in learning more about Herbalife products, you can visit my website, and if you have any questions you can e-mail me. I have helped hundreds of people lose their depression about weight loss and gain confidence to maintain their goals.
If your asking what happens when you stop using Herbalife... I actually tried this at the request of a client. (Oct, Nov, Dec) I did not gain any weight, or inches, but did learn that I have trained myself into eating healthy portions of food, to maintain my weight.

There are a lot of factors to depression, which I do not know much about. What I believe is this: quick fix diets are not helpful in the long-run. You will lose weight and feel better about yourself, but once you stop doing the 'diet' the weight comes back. That enough to be depressing in and of itself.
Sara - I like your tickerfactory thing. Very cool! And congrats on the weight loss! Having support helps!!!
Best,
Colleen
