targeting weight loss / food specific diets.
Well the cereal diet is definately not a good idea, even if you are eating a "healthy" cereal, most cereals are full of sugar and the vitamins come from added chemicals, not natural sources.
You really need to eat a large variety of foods to get all your nutrients, running your daily food intake through a nutrient calculating program will really open your eyes (my site has one).
And as for targeting weight loss around the belly or any area - it can't be done. Situps and crunches wont cause you to lose the stomach any faster, in fact you might build up your stomach muscles and make it stick out even more. Gererally aerobic activity is what is needed, along with a calorie deficit (taking in less calories than you burn in a day). You need to figure out your basil metabolic rate (how many calories you burn in a day without exercising), factor in your calories burned during exercise and then keep that number higher than your calorie intake and that stomach will disappear. Just remember as you get into better shape the body gets more efficient at running or other activities so you will have to step it up as time goes on to keep losing the weight.
