newbe searching for answers

Hi everyone! My name is Jeff, I am 58 years old, 5'7" 250 lbs. I have had a weight problem since age 3 (!). I have been on many diets. The only one on which I had any long lasting success was Fit For Life, on which I lost 70 lbs. and kept it off for 5 years. However, my doctor said to get off it as it was adversely affecting my blood chemistry. That was in 1992. Of course, the weight came back quickly. Since then, I have tried Atkins (felt sick all the time) the Rice Diet (wound up in the hospital due to depletion of electrolytes), and several others which resulted in a loss of ten to fifteen lbs. only to inch back while still on the diet (DASH, Mediterranean, Chinese Medicine diet, Yoga diet, and more...). I do treadmill at least 3 times a week, yoga 3 times a week, and Tai Chi daily. Although I feel better with exercise, it doesn't seem to help with the weight. I was diagnosed 2 years ago with sleep apnea. I faithfully use my CPAP machine. I sleep and feel much better, but instead of the usual weight loss when apnea is treated, I quickly gained 20 lbs. I really would like to avoid bariatric surgery, but am at a loss for alternatives. Any ideas anyone?

Lightbulb Try the natural way.

Hey Jeff,
It sounds like you have spent your whole life hating and abusing your body. Maybe if you just started to eat right and keep exercising you could lose the weight a little at a time and get healthy in the process. Start to read the labels and become truly aware of everything you eat. (Someone just told me that if I eat at least 5 grams of protein for every 100 calories it should expedite the weight loss process. I am trying that now. )
I have found through my years of yo-yo dieting that the less processed food is the better it is for you. Start by trying to eat as many foods as possible in their natural state. i.e. fresh fruits and vegetables and low fat/low salt meat cooked at home. Try a variety of spices that you have not used before, I especially love dill weed on fish and tarragon in soups and stews with beef. And don't forget to drink lots of water. For a treat try some of the new frozen yogurts out there. I think the key is trying to find things that are healthy that you really enjoy eating instead of forcing yourself to give up food .
I could go on and on but this seems like a good place to stop. I will look forward to hearing about your progress.

Thaks Mamaweese

Thanks Mamaweese, I'll give the protein idea a try. As to the other advice, I am exercising, watching what I eat, using good, healthy ingredients;all to no avail! That's why I'm frustrated.
Your right about my attitudes about my body, and I have made many positive changes in recent years. Much has, in fact, improved, but not my weight. I'll keep you posted on my progress, and you keep me posted on yours! Are you in the U.S.? If so, Happy Fourth of July!
As to FatTossder's probing and insightful comments, I'm afraid you are telling us much more about yourself than about the topic of weight loss. Perhaps you should make your own website!

Wink Positive attitude beats all else.

I am glad you have made the positive changes. My gym is closed today so it was kind of fun to try my Sweatin' to the Oldies tape this morning. I hadn't remembered it being so challenging. I am also attempting meditation, in a small way, to try to find some calm within myself. I tend to be anxious and impatient at times, including when I am trying to lose weight. ( and i really am not a flake )
Good luck to both of us and I will keep an eye out for you.
I agree about Fatosser hopefully he/she can take his/her opinions elsewhere!

OK, Mamaweese!
I do meditation too (part of yoga, tai chi). It is wonderful for staying calm, but alas, has not helped me reduce. Hope it works for you!

Wink I'll try anything once, twice if I like it!

Remember that old saying. The meditation is just my newest thing I guess. I am going out of town for the weekend and am trying to figure out a way to not have it knock me off of my diet. My hubby and I have always vacationed from our healthy eating when traveling. It makes traveling real appealing. On the other hand it is kind of lousy to have to go on vacation and be thinking about everything I eat. Double edged sword I guess.
This may sound silly but I actually fit in a pair of pants this morning that I hadn't been able to wear for quite a while. I think I will take them with me as a gentle reminder.
Have a great weekend and I will check in on you Sunday night.

Hey Mamaweese!
How did the vacation go? I hope you and your hubby had a great time.
Some people on another site suggested the Weight Watchers program. Have you ever tried it?
Great news about the pants that now fit. Keep up the good work!

Program That Really Works!!! Good Luck!!!

I have been on this great weight loss program for 2 months now and I have lost 12 lbs. and I feel great, another great thing about this program is that you do not have to leave home and there is no medication but you still have a Drs. guidance and a professional staff that is behind you 100%, they also help with meal, maintenance and exercise suggestions. I highly recommend this program to anyone who is TRULY SERIOUS about losing weight....It really works!!! GOOD LUCK!!!
