Cool What really works?

I am new to this whole forum thing but out of shear confusion I am trying to get some real input. I am nearly 50 years old and have tried to eat healthy and exercise on a regular basis. I have tried all of "the diets" in the past and have finally realized the real art of this is to eat healthy and exercise. While trying to research whether I should focus on calories, fiber, protein, etc. . . to lose 20 pounds I have found conflicting information. This morning I finally did an inventory of what I have been trying to eat over the past few weeks.
I eat approximately 2161 calories, 124 grams of protein and 43 grams of fiber. I also eat as little fat as possible. I exercise 5 out of every 7 days at the gym doing the elliptical machine for 50 minutes and the sauna set a 9 for 20 - 30 minutes. Over the past month I have lost only about 4 pounds and am simply trying to figure out where my focus should be regarding what I am eating.
I have no interest in trying fad diets but I would love to find out what the most important focus should be on regarding what to eat for optimum weight loss over a fairly short period of time. Is protein more important than calories? Is fiber? Do I have to eat under so many calories a day regardless of their protein or fiber content?
I would really appreciate input on this matter. Hopefully this forum won't be to difficult for me to figure out how to use. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Thumbs up

Hiya Mama-Believe me I know where you are coming from. I have also found that the best way to lose weight (and keep it off) is to eat healthy and exrcise. Granted it doesnt come off that fast, but it tends to stay off-and you have the added benefit of feeling great instead of tired and cranky as you may with some of those fad diets out there.

I was wondering-have you measured yourself? If you are exercising, you may be gaining muscle which would show less of a weight loss-but makes all the difference in the world as far as your health goes. You may not see much of a difference in the scale-but I would venture a guess that your problem areas may be getting smaller, and your muscles may be getting biggger which would explain your 4 lb loss as opposed to a higher number.

I also wanted to add that it is not the quantity of weight lost, it is the quality....you are eating healthy, and that 4 lbs will be gone forever if you continue this healthy lifestyle...
